A
couple of months ago, I blogged about a fun
contest sponsored by French Toast. By now, you are probably
done shopping for the new school year. If your child's school is
among the many in the U.S. that have a dress code, this is the perfect time to
show off the unique personality and talents of your kid - and let's not forget
how totally cute they look in their new uniform.
If you missed my earlier posts, French
Toast are sponsoring a $15,000 contest in which kids who attend a school
with a dress code can show the world what makes them unique and special. The
“Show Us The Real ‘U’ In Uniform” contest is open to all uniform-wearing
children. Its goal is to provide a forum for kids to express their
individuality.
Children are encouraged to send in videos or essays with pictures – showing
them dressed in their uniforms – that illustrate and describe why they are
exceptional. Kids and their parents can enter the contest by visiting http://www.uinuniform.com/ and following
the instructions. On November 1, French Toast will be posting the 10 finalists
and people will be able to vote for their favorites. The grand prize winner

French Toast. Results will be announced on or around November 30.

Giveaway – French Toast Back to School Clothes – $50 Gift Certificate – Ends 8/10/10
July 26, 2010
America’s bestselling brand of quality kids school uniforms at great prices.
When it comes to kids’ clothing, it’s important that it’s made to last. That’s especially true of school uniforms. French Toast has the quality and low prices that parents want and the styles that schools require. Even if your child doesn’t need to wear a uniform to school, French Toast styles can easily work for other occasions.
French Toast has sizes available for cute little pre-schoolers all the way through to hefty high schoolers. And I think it’s great that French Toast understands that all children do not fit into the same mold. There are sizes available for short, tall, skinny or wide kids. They even have pants with adjustable waists or ones that are un-hemmed for a customized fit.
The prices are really low – young men’s pants for under $20. Smaller sizes are even less.
It had been awhile since my guys had worn French Toast. Somehow I had it in my mind that they were going to be cheap quality to go with the cheap prices. But noooooo. The quality is excellent. The pants, shorts and shirts look fabulous straight out of the packages. And I was surprised that the sweater vest was the first thing that just had to be tried on and worn immediately. All of the fabrics are made to look great through repeated washings.
French Toast has detailed sized charts to help you get the right fit. This is especially helpful when trying to older kids who are getting taller and shifting shapes. Boys’ clothing is available for sizes 2T-4T, 4-7, 8-14, 16-20, Slim, Husky and Young Men’s. Girl’s Clothing is available for sizes 2T-4T, 4-6X/7, 7-14, 16-20, Slim, Plus, Juniors, and Young Women. The clothing I received was true to size and exactly as I expected.
If you’re not sure about your school’s dress code, French Toast has an easy search form that you can use.
French Toast clothing looks great when worn for a school uniform or for other occasions. This is the type of clothing that you’ll want to hand down to another child when yours has outgrown it!

Uniforms gaining popularity in school districts

Headbands and belts can add flare to a school uniform.

If you like this ...
Over the summer, school administrators review policies including whether or not to implement a school uniform code. Although not in all areas, school uniform policies are gaining momentum. Researchers estimate that almost 25% of public schools now have uniforms. In New York City alone, more than half a million elementary-school students will be wearing uniforms by next fall.
Most private schools open their doors with a uniform policy in place. It was not until 1987 that a public school made this move. Cherry Hill Elementary in Baltimore, MD was the first public school to implement a uniform policy. The Long Beach Unified School District in California adopted a mandatory uniform policy in 1994, making this the first district to have a uniforms in some of its schools.
Educators say implementing a school uniform policy can boost achievement scores and promote a safe learning environment. In evaluating the district's pilot programs, the Long Beach administrators found that use of school uniforms enhanced school safety, improved the learning environment, reduced ethnic and racial tensions, bridged socioeconomic differences between children, promoted good behavior, improved children's self-respect and self-esteem, and produced cost savings for participating families. Since the district implemented the uniform policy, school crime has dropped by 76 percent, while attendance has reached an all-time high.
If your school or district is making this move, expect your tween to protest - loudly. There are some accessory options that may help ease the transition. Here are some ideas from Michael Arking, President of French Toast , a school uniform manufacturer:
Layered socks and tights add more color to the uniforms
Headbands to add some flare, they can also switch up their hair
styles from day to day to update their look. Not a completely different hair
cut but, hair up, down, pony tail etc.
Belts
Different shoes, flats with different colors and patterns
Jewelry if permitted by schools to add individuality
"Fake" glasses are also popular now
Selecting a loud or unique backpack to suit the students style
Add a scarf to add color
If you can wear their favorite color t shirts under uniforms for
boys allow the collar to peak out from under the polo.
Boys can also look into different types of shoes to add color to
the uniforms, Vans or Keds that have different patterns depending on what is
accepted in schools
Boys can also add their favorite color or pattern backpack
Many companies including French Toast offer uniform options and accessories. Arking says "Accessorizing school uniforms was a very strong trend in the spring and we expect it to carry through the fall and beyond. Interestingly, the "private school look" is popular on shows like "Gossip Girl" and "The Suite Life."
Uniforms made easy
Last year was the first year my daughter had to wear a uniform to school, and I dutifully went out and bought her a variety of acceptable polos and khakis, and by halfway through the year, almost everything I’d purchased was falling apart. So I bought some more pieces, this time actually, you know, paying attention to the brand and the fabric composition. It turns out that those all-cotton polos I’d purchased don’t really stand up to washing nearly so well as a poly-cotton blend, for example. And it furthermore turns out that when a company specializes in uniforms, they generally know what they’re doing.
This is all preface to telling you that French Toast has been outfitting kids in school uniforms for a really long time, and they know what they’re doing. I bought this khaki scooter last year and umpteen-hundred washes later it still looks new. I was so impressed with its durability, when French Toast contacted me and offered to send me a few pieces to try out, I was very excited to order some shirts to see if they hold up equally well. We received this one and this one, and so far they’ve come through the initial wash without any shrinking or pilling. My daughter loves that they’re clearly made for girls, rather than being the boxy boy-fit of most polos we’ve found, and I’m looking forward to them lasting an entire year (or longer).
In short: I’m sold. Why should you care? Well, one lucky Want Not reader is going to receive their choice of three entire outfits from French Toast—you select the tops and bottoms you’d like to receive, and just like that, your uniform shopping for the year is practically complete!
Want a shot at winning? First, go review the contest rules and regulations, then come on back here and leave a comment on this post by 8:00 a.m. Eastern (that’s 5:00 a.m. Pacific) on Thursday, July 15th, 2010 to be entered. Winner to be determined by random number generation and crispness of pleats.
Ready? Go!

More than 1 in 5 public schools now have a dress code, and that’s on top of the many private, parochial and charter schools that have dress codes! Does your school have a dress code? Kristina's school doesn't but they definitely have guidelines that you have to follow. No flip flops until Grade 4, no showing your stomach, and I believe nothing sleeveless. Of course no hats is a big one too!
This is a great contest that you can really get your kids involved in and it doesn't just benefit your child, it will really help out their school too!

Now that school is out, kids are free to enjoy the nice weather and summer activities. In my family, we visit the local library, have picnics at the park, and spend time at the pool. If you are looking for a special project for your school-aged children during summer vacation, check out the contest launched last month by French Toast.
French Toast are sponsoring a $15,000 contest in which kids who attend a school with a dress code can show the world what makes them unique and special. The contest that I blogged about a few weeks ago is called “Show Us The Real ‘U’ In Uniform”, and is open to all uniform-wearing children. Its goal is to provide a forum for kids to express their individuality.

In this contest, children are encouraged to send in videos or essays with pictures – showing them dressed in their uniforms – that illustrate and describe why they are exceptional. Kids and their parents can enter the contest by visiting www.uinuniform.com and following the instructions. Videos must include some footage of the student in his/her school uniform and can be a maximum of two minutes in length. Essays can be a maximum of 300 words and must be accompanied by at least one picture of the child in uniform (maximum of six pictures). The final day to submit an entry is September 15.
On November 1, French Toast will be posting the 10 finalists and people will be able to vote for their favorites. The grand prize winner will win $10,000 in cash and their school will receive $5,000 in vouchers from French Toast. Results will be announced on or around November 30.

French Toast - Show Us The Real ‘U’ In Uniform $15,000 Contest
French Toast offers a variety of uniform options that allows your children to show off their individual personalities. Now they want children and teens to show them the Real "U" in Uniform. They are extremely excited in helping children show the world that they can be completely unique and fabulous while wearing a school uniform. The best thing about school uniforms is that they reduce negativity for the students who can't afford the latest fashions. Most importantly it cuts down on competition so that students can focus more on the classroom. But this contest is fun as it will allow kids to learn the different ways they can wear a uniform while still being able to do amazing and spectacular things.

French Toast “Show Us The Real ‘U’ In Uniform” Contest
Do your kids wear school uniforms? Here in Beaumont the middle schools have a “strict” dress code. Not the elementary, not the high schools, only the middle schools. To me it makes no since. But if that is the rules, we have to abide by them. The children here are required to wear a polo shirt in the colors of their middle school. Each of the middle schools here have different colors. Leandra is in the 7th grade and she is required to wear only a grey polo shirt with a neutral color belt and no colored hair accessories, jewelry, or socks.
Next year Tevin will be entering middle school, but at a different school than Leandra. He will be attending the public magnet school. He will have to wear blue, white, or green. They are not allowed to have logos. This is where French Toast comes in.
French Toast has been making children’s school uniforms for years. Their clothing abides by the schools uniforms regulations and have many items to choose from. They are also having a contest to let the uniformed kids show off their uniqueness. It is called the “Show Us The Real ‘U’ In Uniform”. To enter the contest by visiting www.uinuniform.com and following the instructions regarding submitting a video or essay along with pictures. The final day to submit an entry is September 15. The winner of the contest will get $15,000.
“Show Us The Real ‘U’ In Uniform” contest is a way for kids to show off their uniqueness through the dress codes. Under that uniform all kids have their own personality. French Toast wants them to show it off.
